Washington: President Donald Trump has landed in Malaysia, marking the beginning of his Asia trip, which includes three key stops during his second term.
After a lengthy journey of nearly 24 hours, which included two refueling stops, Air Force One touched down in Kuala Lumpur just before 10 a.m. local time on Sunday.
Trump expressed his gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for the country's role in mediating the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.
A ceremonial red carpet has been laid out for Trump's arrival, where he will be formally welcomed by Anwar, providing the President with the grand reception he appreciates.
This visit coincides with the ASEAN Summit, where leaders from South Asia are gathering.
During his flight, Trump remarked, "Malaysia played a significant role in the resolution of the Thailand-Cambodia situation, which is why I am visiting. I owe this trip to the Malaysian leader, who is a commendable individual."
Later on Saturday, Trump is anticipated to join leaders from Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to finalize a peace agreement.
This trip emphasizes Trump's reliance on face-to-face diplomacy as he engages with both allies and rivals, aiming to forge agreements that could impact economic and national security.
However, his penchant for tariffs and unpredictable foreign relations has created uncertainty among traditional US allies in the region, presenting a challenge for the President to prove his negotiation skills.
Trump's arrival in Malaysia marks the start of a six-day tour across three countries, as he seeks to redefine the US's global role amidst China's growing influence.
The President, who champions an 'America First' policy, claims to have brokered resolutions to eight conflicts, including a fragile ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas situation, using tariffs as a negotiating tool.
He has also indicated that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will be a significant topic during his crucial meeting with China's Xi Jinping, amid ongoing trade tensions.
Upon his arrival in Kuala Lumpur, Trump is set to sign a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
